Priests will guide devotees who would like to take Deeksha to observe the vratam for Lord Ayyappa. Every year devotees of Lord Ayyappa will take deeksha and make pilgrimage to Sabarimala Temple, where the Lord is believed to have meditated for the benefit of mankind. The Sabarimala temple is closed for most of the year, except the first five days of each month on the Malayalam calendar, during Vishu (April), and the period from November (karthika masa) till Makara Vilakku in January. Devotees who get initiated into this vratam have to follow strict austerities for a period of 41 days like daily Ayyappa puja, restriction on food habits etc.They carry their offering to Lord Ayyappa called ‘ irumudi’ which includes a coconut filled with ghee for abhishekam to the deity among other traditional offerings of betel leaves, nuts, turmeric etc.
