According to the legends, the Devas and Asuras churned the Ocean for the nectar of immortality (Amrutha), using the mandara mountain as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. When they encountered the lethal potion, Kalakuta or halahala poison, that could destroy all of creation, Lord Shiva consumed it to save the world. In the process, a few drops fell into the ocean.  The serpents were worshipped and prayed to, to be saved from the ill effects of the poison.
Worshipping the Naag Devatas is said to protect one from the malefic effects of planet Raahu.
