RUDRABISHEKAM. Each family registering will be given a clay Shiva Linga to perform the puja at the temple. Devotees may bring milk, fruits, flowers, paan leaves and nuts and coins for the puja. All other puja saamagri will be provided by the temple.

Lord Shiva is worshipped in the Linga Swaroopa in most temples. It signifies the unending, undefinable source of life, the infinite Paramatman. The Linga has to be cooled with abhishekam. Shiva is referred to as ‘Abisheka Priyan’, One who likes abishekam. To cool and please Him we do abhishekam. Chanting Sri Rudram while perfoming the abhishekam is apractice that is prevalent in all Shiva temples and households.

 Sri Rudram or Rudra prasnam is a part of the KrishnaYajur Veda.  It is divided into two parts, the Rudra Namakam and Chamakam.

It is said that Sri Rudra is a great purifier which when repeatedly chanted with devotion can destroy the worst of the sins. One can attain all material benefits for enjoyment of life on earth and Mukthi, which is freedom from the ills of the world. But to get the complete benefit of the chanting, it has to be chanted with utmost faith and complete surrender.

If one Rudra [that is, eleven times the eleven stanzas of Namakam chanted along with one stanza of Chamakam every time by a single person] is chanted, it can free one from all childhood diseases.

Various benefits are outlined for the repeated chanting of Sri Rudram.

There are eleven Anuvakas in Rudra Namakam. In the first one Rudra is asked to turn away His Ghora Roopa and keep away all weapons. Having been pacified, He is asked to destroy the sins of those for whom it is being chanted. In each of the following Anuvakas, He is seen in different forms.  After thus worshipping Shiva, and identifying Him in almost everything, the Chamakam is chanted. In the Chamakam we ask for everything material, ideal to attain happiness as a human. It seeks to show the way to Realisation through fulfillment of material life., ultimately leading to Divine fulfillment.
